Remember a couple days ago, I was talking about my mental problems in Afghanistan, and how there were a couple trips that I wasn’t fully invested in as a result? This trip, which included Bali, Siem Reap, and Singapore, was the first trip where I really noticed my inability to be present. It was so bad that I decreed that I would go to no more 5-star hotels, even though we could afford them at the time. I was sick of having to engage every person in the hotel as they greeted me, asked me how I was, how I’d enjoyed my morning at Angkor Wat.

I’ve gone through my pictures from that trip several times, but not since I’ve come to grips with my mental state. I found it very difficult to find photos that engaged me. This one, though, has been a perennial favorite. I love the delicacy of the carvings, the layers of temple going into the background, and the blue sky behind the red stones. I can’t wait to dive back into these photos and see what else I can find there.
